Sun, Moon, Rising: the three placements everyone asks for first. Your Sun is who you're becoming, your Moon is your inner weather, your Rising is the lens people meet before they meet you. All three need your exact birth time and place to be real, not guessed. The signs are free. The real read is where ERA comes in.

01 /The basics

Three signs, three questions.

Ask someone their sign and they will give you one answer: their Sun. That is one third of the picture. Every birth chart runs on three placements that do different jobs: the Sun, the Moon, and the Rising sign (the ascendant). "What's my sign" is really three separate questions, and most people have only ever answered one of them.

The Sun and Moon come from your birth date alone: the Sun from the day, the Moon from the day and roughly the hour (it changes sign every two to three days, fast enough that a late-night birth can land it a sign earlier or later). The Rising sign is different again, tied to the exact minute you were born, which is why it is the one placement most people never actually know.

02 /The three roles

What each placement actually does.

Your Sun sign is the direction you are growing into: the core drive underneath everything else, the identity you are building toward across a lifetime, not just how you act on a given day.

Your Moon sign is your inner weather: what you actually feel underneath the Sun's direction, what makes you feel safe, and what unsettles you when nobody else can tell. It runs quieter than the Sun, and it runs constantly.

Your Rising sign is the lens: the first impression you give a stranger, and the lens the rest of your chart gets read through. Two people with an identical Sun and Moon can come across completely differently depending on what is rising.

03 /Why the time matters

The rising sign is the one that needs the exact minute.

The ascendant moves fast: about one degree every four minutes, a full sign roughly every two hours. A birth certificate that says "around 9am" is not precise enough. Twenty minutes either way can already put a different sign on the horizon, which is why the Rising sign in this result changes the moment you tighten the time.

This is also exactly why most people who know their Sun and Moon sign have never looked up their Rising. It requires a piece of information (an exact, accurate birth time) that free horoscope sites never ask for, so they skip it, or worse, guess.

04 /Where the real read starts

The big three is the foundation, not the answer.

Your Sun, Moon, and Rising are fixed the moment you are born. They are the natal foundation: real, permanent, worth knowing. But they describe who you were built to become, not who you are becoming right now.

That is what a progressed chart is for. It moves your natal placements forward with your age, and reading it is where ERA begins: not just naming your three signs, but reading what they have turned into today.

Common questions

What are the big three in astrology?

Your Sun, Moon, and Rising sign. The Sun is your core identity and where you're headed, the Moon is your emotional inner world, and the Rising (or ascendant) is the mask and first impression you give off. Together they are the fastest, most-asked-about read of a birth chart.

Why does the rising sign need an exact birth time?

The ascendant moves through the whole zodiac roughly every 24 hours, about one sign every two hours. A birth time off by twenty minutes can already shift it into the next sign, so without your exact, accurate time there is no real rising sign, only a guess dressed up as one.

What does a progressed chart add beyond the big three?

Your Sun, Moon, and Rising are fixed at birth. Your progressed chart moves them forward using your age, showing who you are becoming right now, not just who you were the day you were born. That is where ERA's real read starts.
