Your rising sign — also called the ascendant — is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. It is arguably the most personal point in your entire chart, because it changes signs approximately every two hours. While millions of people share your Sun sign, your rising sign narrows things significantly.
The rising sign determines how you present to the world — your first impression, your physical appearance tendencies, and the lens through which you approach new experiences. If your Sun sign is who you are at your core, your rising sign is who you appear to be when people first meet you.
Your rising sign sets the entire structure of your birth chart. It determines which zodiac sign governs each of your twelve houses, which in turn determines where each planet falls in your chart. Your rising sign is determined by three factors: your date of birth, your exact time of birth, and your place of birth. The time is the most critical element — because the ascendant changes signs roughly every two hours, even a 15-minute difference in birth time can shift which sign is rising.
This is why ERA asks for your exact birth time during onboarding. Without it, the rising sign calculation may be incorrect, which would cascade into incorrect house placements throughout your chart. If you do not know your birth time, ERA can still calculate your chart, but the rising sign and house structure will be approximate.
