Your rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact minute you were born. It is not a planet, it is an angle, the point where the sky meets the earth at your birthplace. It sets the entire frame of your chart: it decides which sign rules your first house, and which houses every planet falls into. Get it wrong and the whole house layout shifts.
Unlike your sun or moon sign, the rising sign cannot be found from your birth date alone. The ascendant changes roughly every two hours, so a difference of even twenty minutes can move it to the next sign. This is the honest part most calculators skip: you need your exact, accurate birth time. No time, no real rising sign, only a guess.
