The Big Three in Astrology: Sun, Moon, and Rising Sign Explained

Your sun sign is only a third of the story. Meet the three pillars of your chart.

By ERA Astrology·March 25, 2026·3 min read

When someone asks "what is your sign," you are answering with your sun sign — one of three fundamental pieces of your natal chart. The "big three" are your Sun, your Moon, and your Ascendant (rising sign). Together they form the core of your astrological personality. But here is what most people do not know: these three points also progress. Your progressed Sun may be in a different sign than your natal one. Your progressed Moon changes signs every 2.5 years. ERA calculates all of this and shows you your current big three — not just the ones from birth.

The Sun: your core identity

Your sun sign is the one you know — the one you read in horoscopes. It represents your ego, your life purpose, and the energy you want to express in the world. A Sun in Leo wants to shine and be recognized. A Sun in Capricorn wants to build something lasting. A Sun in Pisces wants to connect with something larger than the individual.

But your progressed Sun moves. If you were born with Sun in Aries and you are 35, your progressed Sun has already moved into Taurus. That does not erase your Aries nature — it modifies it. Your drive now channels in a more patient, practical, and tangible-results-oriented way. Sun-sign astrology cannot capture this. ERA can.

The Moon: your emotional world

Your moon sign defines how you process emotions, what makes you feel safe, and how you react instinctively. A Moon in Cancer needs emotional security and family connection. A Moon in Aquarius needs space and emotional freedom. A Moon in Scorpio processes everything with intensity and depth.

Your progressed Moon is one of the most important indicators in astrology because it moves relatively quickly — it changes signs every 2.5 years and traverses the entire zodiac in 27 years. Each sign change marks a shift in your emotional needs and life priorities. ERA tracks your progressed Moon and uses it as a key indicator in every reading.

The Ascendant: your mask and your first impression

The Ascendant (or rising sign) is the sign that was on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It defines how others perceive you, your physical appearance, and your natural way of approaching new situations. It is your "public face."

A Virgo Ascendant presents in an analytical and reserved way. A Sagittarius Ascendant presents in an enthusiastic and expansive way. A Scorpio Ascendant presents in an intense and magnetic way.

Unlike the Sun and Moon, the progressed Ascendant moves very slowly — it may stay in the same sign your whole life or change once. But when it does, the way you present yourself to the world changes fundamentally. ERA calculates your natal and progressed Ascendant to give you a complete picture of how you are perceived — and how that perception has evolved.
