Planets, signs, houses, and aspects. Everything you need to understand your birth chart from scratch.
Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the exact moment of your birth. It contains the position of each planet in a zodiac sign and an astrological house, plus the angular relationships (aspects) between them. It sounds complex because it is — but once you understand the three basic components (planets, signs, and houses), the chart starts making sense. This guide takes you from zero to functional understanding. And when you want to go deeper, ERA calculates your progressed chart to show you who you are today — not just who you were born as.
Think of the birth chart as a sentence: planets are the verbs (what is done), signs are the adverbs (how it is done), and houses are the nouns (where it is done).
The Sun in Gemini in the 10th house reads like this: identity (Sun) expresses itself communicatively and versatilely (Gemini) in the area of career and public reputation (10th house). Each planet-sign-house combination produces a unique interpretation.
Aspects are the relationships between planets. A trine (120 degrees) indicates flow between two energies. A square (90 degrees) indicates tension. An opposition (180 degrees) indicates polarity. These aspects complicate and enrich the base reading.
Key insight
Planets = what. Signs = how. Houses = where. Aspects = the relationship between everything.
Sun: your core identity, your ego, your life purpose. It is what you want to be and what shines when you are aligned.
Moon: your emotional world, your instinctive needs, what makes you feel safe. It is the part of you that reacts before thinking.
Mercury: how you think, process information, and communicate. It defines your mental style.
Venus: what you value, how you love, what attracts you. It rules relationships, aesthetics, and pleasure.
Mars: how you act, compete, and assert yourself. It is your engine, your action energy.
Jupiter: where you expand, what brings you luck and optimism. It rules faith, higher education, and long-distance travel.
Saturn: where you discipline yourself, what limits you, and where you mature. It rules structure, responsibility, and time.
Uranus: where you break molds, what makes you unique, where you seek freedom.
Neptune: where you dream, what inspires you, where you can get lost in illusions.
Pluto: where you transform deeply, what hidden power you have, where you face your shadows.
The 12 zodiac signs are modes of expression. Aries expresses with impulsiveness and leadership. Taurus with stability and persistence. Gemini with versatility and curiosity. Cancer with protection and emotion. Leo with drama and generosity. Virgo with precision and service. Libra with balance and diplomacy. Scorpio with intensity and depth. Sagittarius with expansion and philosophy. Capricorn with ambition and structure. Aquarius with innovation and detachment. Pisces with intuition and compassion.
Each planet in a sign takes on that sign's qualities. Mars in Aries is direct, impulsive action. Mars in Libra is diplomatic, indecisive action. Same planet, completely different expression.
The 12 houses represent life areas. 1st house: identity and appearance. 2nd house: money and values. 3rd house: communication and learning. 4th house: home and roots. 5th house: creativity and pleasure. 6th house: work and health. 7th house: relationships and partnerships. 8th house: transformation and shared resources. 9th house: philosophy and long-distance travel. 10th house: career and reputation. 11th house: community and future projects. 12th house: the unconscious and endings.
A planet in a house activates that life area with its particular energy. Venus in the 7th house indicates that relationships are a central area. Saturn in the 10th house indicates that career requires discipline and patience but produces solid results.
Aspects are the angular relationships between planets. The main ones are:
Conjunction (0 degrees): energy fusion. Two planets at the same degree amplify each other. Can be powerful or overwhelming.
Sextile (60 degrees): opportunity. Smooth flow between two energies that requires minimal effort to activate.
Square (90 degrees): productive tension. Two energies in friction that generate motivation to act. Difficult but generative.
Trine (120 degrees): natural flow. Two energies that cooperate effortlessly. Can generate complacency if not used consciously.
Opposition (180 degrees): polarity. Two opposite energies that require integration. It is not conflict — it is the need to find the middle ground.
A chart without tense aspects would be stable but without momentum. Difficult aspects are what generate movement and growth.
Everything above is the foundation. But your natal chart is a fixed photo from the day you were born. You are not static — and your chart should not be either.
The progressed chart shows how your planets have moved since you were born. Your progressed Sun may have changed signs. Your progressed Moon moves through the entire zodiac every 27 years. These movements define the real phases of your life.
ERA calculates your progressed chart automatically when you enter your birth date. Every conversation you have with ERA is anchored in your progressed chart — who you are today — not the static natal chart. That is the difference between reading an old map and navigating with real-time GPS.
What makes ERA different
ERA does not stop at the natal chart. It calculates your progressed chart and uses it as the foundation for every response — showing who you are today, not just who you were born as.
Your chart isn't generic. Your reading shouldn't be either.
