Behind the meme is a real astrological phenomenon. ERA explains what it actually means.
Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth. Approximately three times per year, Earth "catches up" to Mercury in its orbit, creating the illusion that Mercury moves backward. It does not actually stop or reverse - it is perspective, like when you pass a car on the highway and it appears to move backward.
Each retrograde period lasts about three weeks. There are two additional phases: the pre-shadow (Mercury slows down) and the post-shadow (Mercury recovers lost ground). The full cycle can extend to six weeks.
In the astrological tradition, Mercury rules mental processing, verbal and written communication, commercial agreements, technology as an extension of communication, and short-distance travel. When Mercury retrogrades, these domains enter revision mode.
This does not mean "everything goes wrong." It means that what was not properly resolved - ambiguous contracts, avoided conversations, impulsive decisions - manifests to be corrected. The function of the retrograde is repair, not destruction.
